Guangzhou remain 14 points clear
AFC Champions League quarter-finalists Guangzhou Evergrande remain in a commanding position at the top of the Chinese Super League despite a late own goal from Brazilian Elkeson forcing Marcello Lippi’s side to settle for a 2-2 draw against Guizhou Renhe on Saturday.
Goals in each half from Dario Conca and Zhao Xuri had seemingly put Guangzhou, who entertain Qatar’s Lekhwiya in the first leg of their AFC Champions League quarter-final tie in just over two weeks, in a strong position with just over half an hour remaining at Guiyang Olympic Sports Cente.
But after Bosnian striker Zlatan Muslimovic pulled a goal back for 2012 AFC Champions League qualifiers Guizhou six minutes after the hour mark, Elkeson’s 79th minute own goal ended Guangzhou’s seven match winning streak in all competitions.
The Brazilian, though, has been a driving force behind Guangzhou’s bid for a third consecutive Super League title this season having scored 19 goals.
And despite the setback, Guangzhou remain 14 points clear of second placed Shandong Luneng after beating Beijing Guoan 3-0 on Wednesday
